Things to consider when choosing a Firestop contractor for your needs.
Firestop Inspection Checklist
Ask the contractor these three questions:
- What are your applications?
What product and manufacturer are you using?
What UL systems are you using and may I see them
If the UL drawings specify these items, please verify the following:
- Correct mineral wool as a backer is installed to correct depth and orientation.
- For PVC, if an intumescent collar or retaining collar is required, verify they are fastened to drywall with toggle bolts, not just screws.
- Verify correct pipe penetrants and base materials per UL system.
- Verify annular space (area between penetrant and wall/floor assembly).
- For joint systems, verify backing material and correct depth of caulk. Is the system dynamic or static?
- Sheetrock patching - Verify that the patch extends the opening in the wall by two inches in each direction and that it is mechanically attached to the studs with screws, or toggle bolts with fender washers.
Quality Assurance Minimums:
- Insist that all Firestop on your project is installed by a single source Firestop Specialty Contractor.
- Request the highest level of Firestop training available from the manufacturer. Do not accept Firestop training from a distributor's representative.
- Request an on-site audit during each phase of construction for floor and wall penetrations, edge of slap joints, and head of wall joints by the manufacturer's representative to insure they will stand behind their product as it is installed. Its a Free Service!
- Request all penetrations to be labeled with the UL System Number so you can compare the installation to the UL Drawing that has been submitted and approved by the Architect.
